Managing multiple PTACs
Packaged Terminal Air Conditioning units and Mini Splits have come a long way over the years, becoming more efficient on both the heating and the cooling side. One of the biggest evolutions in PTAC technology, specifically, is the dawn of inverter units. Inverter-type PTAC units offer variable modes so that, rather than running on just one setting, the units can run at one-half or one-quarter capacity to both save energy and maintain room comfort.
Whether in a hotel, senior living facility, hospital, or school, PTACs can offer occupants personal control over comfort in their defined space, and allow for both heating and cooling from a single unit. Unfortunately, facility management over these relatively small HVAC units can take a lot of time and, if uncontrolled, can result in elevated energy costs.
More recently, Internet of Things technology has lent improvements to efficiency. With the dawn of wifi technology, facility managers can anticipate occupant needs and set temperatures based on occupancy or occupant preference. With the capability to adjust temperature setbacks from a single location, Sensi Multiple Thermostat Manager offers facility managers an incredibly efficient option to batch-handle PTACs remotely. And, at just $10 per PTAC per year, it’s an easy business case.
One school facility manager in Florida, who was charged with managing 280 PTAC units across a range of sites, was frustrated with his lack of remote access. After installing Sensi Multiple Thermostat Manager, David was very pleased at how quickly he could get insight into his systems and manage them, from wherever he was. “You can’t put a price on that,” said David. Not to mention an easy install. “I was personally a part of the first few installs. When I did the first few with my technicians, I was astounded by how easy it was.”
Sensi thermostats were developed by White-Rodgers, a mainstay in the thermostat business for over 75 years, and have sold nearly 500,000 units since their launch. With a no-fuss installation guide on the Sensi phone app and a dedicated customer support team, Sensi has seen it all.
According to David, “Of all the projects I’ve been involved with, the Sensi project has proven to be the most cost-effective. We originally estimated a return on investment of six to eight months. After implementing the project, we found it’s actually closer to 4.4 months. I can reasonably suggest to you that we’ll save a quarter of a million dollars a year if this trend continues.”
