Winter indoor home humidity and your comfort

Tips for optimizing indoor home humidity levels

Indoor home humidity levels are usually more of a concern to homeowners in the summer when the high level of moisture in the air can make it feel clingy and sticky. But the low humidity that occurs in winter with the lower temperatures is of equal concern. The lack of moisture in the winter air is what makes it feel crisp and clean, but also dry.

Extreme changes in humidity can create a variety of problems from personal health and comfort to property damage.

Winter Low Humidity Issues

  • Dry, cracked skin and lips
  • Bloody nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Throat and sinus irritation
  • Colds, illness and infection susceptibility
  • Static electricity
  • Wood furniture and floor damage from excessive dryness

Sensi™ Smart Thermostats can help you to be aware of your home humidity levels in order to minimize risk and maximize comfort. View the air humidity in your home in the mobile app, right above your temperature set point. You can also view this number in the web portal.

While clothing, fitness level and personal preference all come into play, the average range for optimal health is between 30 and 50 percent. However, the weather outside does come into play so colder temperatures do dictate humidity levels on the lower end. For example, if the outside temperature is 10°, then the recommended indoor humidity level is 30%. If the outside temperature is 20°, then the indoor home humidity level is 35%, etc.

How can you manage your winter indoor home humidity level?

  • Place shallow containers of water near heat sources and air dry towels or clothes to help add moisture to the air
  • Green plants naturally release moisture into the air so consider adding several to your home and be sure to water and mist them regularly
  • Leave your bathroom door slightly open when showering or let your bath water naturally cool after you’re finished to release moisture into neighboring rooms
  • Your oven dries out your air so cook on the stove-top instead
  • Use a portable humidifier or consider a whole home humidifier

These tips can help you to optimize your indoor home humidity levels and stay comfortable this winter season.
